This is an Amakusa red natural stone. It is quarried from the a mine on the island of Shimoshima, close to the town of Amakusa in the prefecture of Kumamoto. Its' effective grit is somewhere between 500 and 1500 depending on how much you break down the slurry. The stone itself is quite hard and cuts very differently from a synthetic stone, but is a lovely stone if you're looking to get into naturals.

Use & Precaution

Natural stones vary from synthetic stone in that they do not require any soaking, but do require slurry formation via the use of nagura stones or diamond plates. If you use less water on the stone, it will cut faster but have a coarser finish.

Do not also soak in water finishing stones #3000 and above. After use, let the stone dry thoroughly. Returning a stone into its box while still wet or damp will result in molding and might decrease in quality.

It usually takes 1 –2 weeks for us to restock should this item is not available.
